Yes, surprise surprise - learning can be fun! Let's take a look at some fun learning opportunities here in or near Lake County, Florida:
The Artrageous Art Gallery in Leesburg offers classes that include all of your needed supplies. Coming up this month is Silk Serti Painting, Alcohol Ink Painting, Paint & Sip, Tea Bag Fabric Dying, Coffee & Canvas, Cards & Envelopes, Bob Ross Painting, Silk Painting, & Calligraphy. 2-3 hour classes run between $20-$55.
The Lake County Library in Tavares offers free technology classes and training for the public. Some require registration to attend. The event calendar for January lists these classes and sessions: Tech Help Tuesdays (for computer, tablet, or phone issues - bring your device), Computer Basics (parts of a computer, how to use a mouse & keyboard, becoming familiar with the desktop, and the terminology of computers), Intermediate Computer Skills (PC's provided or bring your own laptop - operations, browsing skills, and applications), Digital Photos, Digital Art, Android Device Basics, Beginning iPad / iPhone, Microsoft Word Basics, Microsoft Excel Basics, etc. In addition to the free technology classes, you can find free classes in Astor offering guitar & ukulele lessons (they have 6 ukuleles and 3 guitars that participants can use), clubs at various locations for playing chess, scrabble or mahjong, a teen club, an anime club, a light saber class, a writer's group, cooking classes or demos, and more. There are plenty of events just for kids, including story time, a Lego club, and a babies and toddlers playgroup. Just be sure to make a note of the library hosting the event and pre-register if required.
Orlando Cooking Classes in Mount Dora: Chef Lynn Beacher will bring a cooking class out to your home or you can visit hers in Mount Dora. Gather your friends and family for a fun night of cooking during a private lesson/session. If you have your own idea of what you want to cook, that's great. If not, she has ideas she'll gladly share with you. Personal cooking classes of up to four hours are $80 per person including the cost of the food. If you would like wine, there is an additional charge or you can supply your own. The menu will include an appetizer, main course, side dish, and a dessert, so you'll learn to put together a complete meal. Once done, everyone will sit down together and enjoy what's been created.
If you enjoy painting, consider coming to a Paint & Sip (BYOB, cups / napkins / plates / corkscrews provided, refrigerator available, bring your own ice) session offered at Painting with a Twist Clermont or Painting with a Twist Mount Dora. They say that Paint & Sip is a great place for having fun with your friends or for meeting new people. Classes include all painting supplies and instruction, and some are for children as well as adults. Most seem to be priced between $27 (1.5 hours) - $45 (2 hours). Currently listed events in Mount Dora include Firefly Stars, Sign Painting with Two Interchangeable Cutouts, Love Falls, Pwat the Child, Beach Party, Early Moonrise, Pastel Mountains, Sammy the Sea Turtle, and more. The Plaster Cottage of Clermont offers two locations (Highway 50 in Clermont or Cagans Crossing Clermont) where you can go in and paint a plaster piece ($1 - $10) or a fired ceramic piece (average price $12). They say that families often come in and paint $1 plaster pieces all afternoon. You pay for the piece you want to make and the paint, finish, and firing is included - no studio or additional fees! They offer a Kids Night on Fridays from 6-8 pm that includes plaster painting, pizza, juice/water, and fun for $12. School aged kids can be dropped off or parents are welcome to stay.
If you think you might enjoy archery, consider Revolution Off Road's Archery Experience in Clermont. These 90 minute lessons are designed for people aged 8 and up and all necessary equipment is included for $45. Reserve your time online in advance and wear closed toe shoes and comfortable clothing. While there, you may want to add on ATV riding, the Polaris Razor experience, the Mighty Duck, Archery Tag (groups of 4+), Clay Shooting, or Fishing.
The Roaming Gourmet Ze' Carter, offers cooking classes at The Kitchen in Leesburg. Upcoming classes include a Fabulous Pho Party (Vietnamese soup, choose your favorite ingredients to create your own soup), Meal Prep 101, an Aphrodisiac Inspired Recipe Couples Class, and a Terrific Taco Party. Most classes are two hours and are $35 per person. The couples class is $80 per couple and is a three hour class. Check out some of the recipes that she shares online, including oven fried chicken, sweet potato hummus, pasta salad, wild rice salad, and Caribbean shrimp & rice perlow.
